What are the Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation?

Bed bug infestations can be difficult to detect early on because these pests are small and nocturnal.

However, there are several signs you can look out for:

  1. Bites on Skin: Bed bug bites often appear as red, itchy welts on the skin. They typically occur in clusters or a linear pattern and are commonly found on exposed areas of the body such as the face, neck, arms, and hands.
  2. Blood Stains on Sheets and Mattresses: After feeding, bed bugs may leave behind blood stains on sheets, pillowcases, and mattresses. These stains can be small dots or streaks of blood.
  3. Dark Spots on Mattresses or Furniture: Bed bugs leave behind fecal stains, which appear as small dark spots or smears on mattresses, bed frames, walls, and furniture. These spots may look like ink stains or pepper flakes.
  4. Eggshells and Shed Skins: Bed bugs molt as they grow, shedding their exoskeletons. You may find empty eggshells or shed skins in areas where bed bugs hide, such as mattress seams, crevices, and behind furniture.
  5. Musty Odor: In severe infestations, bed bugs can produce a musty, sweet odor. This odor is often described as similar to that of a wet towel or a damp, moldy room.
  6. Live Bed Bugs: In advanced infestations, you may actually see live bed bugs crawling on your mattress, furniture, or walls, especially during the nighttime when they are most active.
  7. Reddish-Brown Stains on Walls or Furniture: As bed bugs are crushed or squashed, they may leave behind reddish-brown stains on walls, furniture, or bedding.

If you suspect a bed bug infestation, it's essential to take action promptly. Contact a pest control professional for a thorough inspection and treatment plan. Trying to tackle a bed bug infestation on your own can be challenging due to the bugs' ability to hide in tiny cracks and crevices.
